Frequently asked questions · Stock of unique pieces

How do you know what your stock is worth?

Add up the purchase prices, not the asking prices. That is the figure everyone asks for.

Add up what you paid for the pieces still standing. Not your asking prices: those are an expectation, not a value. You need that figure for your year-end accounts, and it is also the denominator of your stock turnover.

That is why recording the purchase price per piece is not an administrative burden but the foundation: without that figure per piece there is no stock value, no turnover ratio and no margin.

For a second-hand business this number says more than turnover. It is the money sitting on your shelves today instead of in your account — and therefore also what you free up by tackling your dead stock.

Where this comes from

This is an explanation, not tax or legal advice. Put your own situation to your accountant.

How do you calculate stock turnover?

Divide the purchase value of what you sold in a period by the average purchase value of your stock over that same period. Use purchase prices on both sides: dividing selling prices by stock valued at cost makes your turnover artificially high. Calculating once a quarter is enough for most businesses.

Can a sold piece disappear from your list?

No. The temptation to delete a row as soon as something sells is strong, but that is precisely the moment you need it: the purchase price and date are your evidence for the margin, and the retention period only starts running then. In France that is five years after closing, in Belgium ten years.
