This page is about Belgium. Its minimum chart of accounts, the MAR, sets out how far the law goes; below that, you choose. That is how margin-scheme sales get their own account, such as 700200. Trading in the UK? Read UK nominal codes.
The short answer: on an account within 700–707, with a number you pick yourself.
The MAR, in full the minimum standard chart of accounts, puts the sales of a Belgian business on account 70 Turnover, in the group 700 to 707 Sales and services. It has no separate account for margin-scheme goods. You create that yourself. 700200 Margin-scheme sales is a common choice, not a legal one.
Why separate? Under the margin scheme you pay VAT on your profit per item, not on the selling price. On an account of their own, those sales stand out at a glance from what you sell at the standard rate, and your accountant finds them without searching.
The top three steps are in the MAR. The bottom one you choose, within 700–707.
Article 10 of the Royal Decree of 21 October 2018 says your chart of accounts must be set up and numbered in line with the MAR in annex 1. Article 11 leaves room: you may adapt an account’s name to the nature of your business, and accounts you do not need can be left out.
For sales, the MAR stops at three digits. It says nothing about what comes below. A six-digit number such as 700200 is therefore yours to set, as long as it starts with 700 to 707.
| Account | What goes on it |
|---|---|
| 700000 | Sales at the standard VAT rate |
| 700200 | Margin-scheme sales |
Selling outside the EU as well? Give exports their own free number in the same group. Which numbers are taken, you will see in your own chart of accounts.
A Belgian BV or NV always does. A sole trader or a general or limited partnership may keep simplified accounts if its turnover for the last financial year, excluding VAT, did not exceed 500,000 euros (art. III.85 of the Code of Economic Law and art. 1 of the Royal Decree). It then keeps at least three day books, for cash, purchases and sales, and the MAR does not apply; the report to the King on the decree says so too.

If your accountant or your software works with account numbers anyway, a separate margin-scheme account is just as useful.

In France the Plan comptable général is compulsory and may be refined: “chaque compte à deux chiffres et plus peut être subdivisé en tant que de besoin” (art. 1131-1). In the Netherlands and the UK the law prescribes no numbers. In the UK each accounting package has its own range; see UK nominal codes.
This is an explanation, not accounting advice. Run your own chart of accounts past your accountant.
The minimum chart of accounts that a Belgian business keeping full accounts must follow. It is annex 1 to the Royal Decree of 21 October 2018. Sales go to account 70 Turnover, in the group 700 to 707 Sales and services.
No. For sales, the MAR goes no further than 700 to 707. A separate account for margin-scheme sales is one you create yourself, numbered within that group.
Yes. Your accounts must be numbered according to the MAR (art. 10 of the Royal Decree of 21 October 2018), and you may adapt their names to your business (art. 11). 700200 falls within 700 to 707.
Not if they keep simplified accounts. That is allowed for a sole trader or a general or limited partnership whose turnover in the last financial year did not exceed 500,000 euros excluding VAT (art. III.85 of the Code of Economic Law and art. 1 of the Royal Decree). A BV or NV always follows the MAR.
No, Odoo’s Belgian chart of accounts has none. You create it under Accounting, Configuration, Chart of Accounts. In Odoo 17 and 18, 700200 is already used for export sales, so pick another free number there.
